Averaging Procedure and Data Availability

When constructing the MOD data sets we use 50° North - 50° South average monthly-mean time series to determine the proper adjustments for each instrument. We also construct a 5° zonal-mean and 10° by 30° gridded daily and monthly-mean data set for each instrument. After the respective adjustments are applied, the individual monthly-mean zonal and gridded average instrument data sets are averaged to produce the monthly MOD zonal mean and gridded products. In this section, we describe in detail how the average values are calculated, and what filtering was applied to the raw instrument data before averaging.

Note that the data restrictions noted here are in addition to those noted in the Instrument section
.

Average
Criteria
  • 20 daily averages per month
  • Average weighted by # of daily values
  • Average time of daily measurements
within 2.5 days of center of month
    (avoid partial-month sampling issues)
  • 15 daily averages per month
  • N7: require only 10 daily averages per month to account for on/off instrument cycling during first several years
  • Average weighted by # of daily values
  • Average time of daily measurements
within 4 days of center of month
    (avoid partial-month sampling issues)
Monthly Gridded Average
Criteria
  • N7: 20 daily averages per month
  • EP: 10 daily averages per month
  • Average weighted by # of daily values

  • Average weighted by # of daily values
  • Corresponding zonal average exists
50°N - 50°S Average
Criteria
  • Minimum of 18 (of 20) 5° zonal mean values present for each month. Otherwise monthly value set as missing.
