Modifiction History

Current Versions based on SBUV Version 8.6 Data

Modification Date: 25 Aug 2012

Release 1:

• Use only measurements made when instrument orbit is within 8am - 4pm Equator Crossing Time (ECT) range.
• Do not include N9 Data.
• Extend N11 to ECT of 5:50 pm to maintain coverage through 1994-1995.
• Profile Only: Filter data after eruptions of El Chichon and Mt. Pinatubo volcanos.
• Total Only: Include N9 Total Ozone solely to fill gaps in N11 coverage. Profile Ozone in these cases set to 0 (missing value).

Past Versions based on TOMS/SBUV Version 8 Data

For continuity, the final Revision 05 MOD Total Ozone data sets (based on Version 8) are provided in the following table.

Revision 05 Total Ozone Data Set Extended

• Includes extended NOAA 18 data using latest calibrations.
• N17 data not used after 2010 because of orbit drift towards the terminator.
• OMI data not used after 2010 because of reduced coverage due to partial physical obstruction of optics (row anomaly).

Revision 05 Total Ozone Data Set Extended

• Includes extended NOAA 17 and NOAA 18 data using latest calibrations.
• Includes extended OMI data.

Modification Date: 1 May 2009

Revision 05 Total Ozone Data Set

• Includes reprocessed N16 and N17 SBUV/2 data using latest calibration.
• OMI data updated from Collection 2 to Collection 3.
• New offsets derived based on revised data sets.
• 1970-1972 N4 BUV data added with no adjustments. User may wish to apply offset based on Comparisons between BUV and Dobson Measurements.

Revision 01 Profile Ozone Data Set

• Includes reprocessed N16 and N17 SBUV/2 data using latest calibration.
• New offsets with drift corrections based on SAGE II and MLS comparisons (see Profile Ozone Derived Adjustments).

Revision 00 Profile Ozone Data Set

• Includes reprocessed N16 and N17 SBUV/2 data using latest calibration.
• Includes filtering for Mt. Pinatubo in the lower to middle stratosphere.
  
• No offsets are applied to the individual data sets.

For continuity, the Revision 00 and Revision 01 MOD Profile Ozone data sets (based on Version 8) are provided in the following table.

Revision 04 Data Set Extended

• The current Revision 4 record has been extended using the latest Aura OMI and N17 SBUV/2 total ozone data.
• Data through August, 2007 have not changed from the previous version for consistency. However, these data will change to incorporate the latest instrument calibrations when we introduce the Revision 5 data set in early 2009.
  
• The data from Sep 2007 through Sep 2008 do include the latest calibrations for OMI and N17 data, but the changes are minor and do not affect the overall consistency of the record.
• Profile Data updated through August 2007.  N16 SBUV/2 data updated and N17 SBUV/2 data added. No Adjustments Between Data Sets.

Revision 04

• Aura-OMI TO3 total ozone, available starting in 2004, has been included in the MOD total ozone data set.
• NOAA 17 SBUV/2 data, available starting in 2002, has been included in the MOD total and profile ozone data sets. 
  
• NOAA 16 SBUV/2 data includes through June 2007. Data after June not included due to advancing orbit drift.
• EP TOMS data replaced with recent reprocessing to address cross-track bias and calibration issues. This update leads to small changes in the overall calibration.
• Profile Data updated through August 2007.  N16 SBUV/2 data updated and N17 SBUV/2 data added. No Adjustments Between Data Sets.

For continuity, the final Revision 04 MOD Total Ozone data set is provided in the following table.

Modification Date: 21 September 2006
Revision 03

• NOAA 16 SBUV/2 data are included through July 2006.
  
• Error identified and corrected in gridded-mean product. N9_PM data (1985-1989) and later period EP TOMS data (2000-2003) were not properly removed from the gridded average data before the creation of the MOD gridded data sets. This lead to errors typically within 2% for grid average data in these periods. Users of the grid average data should update to Revision 3.
  
• Addition of 10° longitude x 5° latitude spacing of gridded means, along with 30° longitude by 10° latitude spacing.
  
• Small adjustments to data quality filters lead to minor ozone value changes (generally less than |0.5| DU, except less than |2| DU 2001-2003).
  
• No changes to Profile MOD Data Set.

For continuity, the Revision 03 MOD Total Ozone data set, based on Version 8 data,is provided in the following table.

Revision 02

• NOAA 16 SBUV/2 data are included through December 2005. The data have been reprocessed over the full time period from 2000-2005, as described in the caveat given with the data.
  
• New NOAA 16 SBUV/2 adjustment based on comparison between the updated NOAA 16 and NOAA 11 SBUV/2 data.
  
• No changes to Profile MOD Data Set
