Chikungunya and Dengue Infection in Kenya

Worldwide, transmission of emerging and re-emerging arthropod-borne viral (arboviral) infections poses a significant threat to human health in the developing and developed world--one that can quickly overwhelm public health resources. This multi-institutional project seeks to estimate the circulation, transmission, infection, and disease for Dengue Virus (DENV) strains 1 through 4 (DENV1-4) and Chikungunya Virus (CHIKV) across two typical Kenyan landscapes. Our objectives are to assess the true burden of CHIKV- and DENV-related human disease, then determine the drivers of viral circulation, estimate the thresholds for outbreak initiation, and provide improved outbreak risk assessment. We investigate transmission of CHIKV and DENV1-4 in two regions of Kenya that represent different degrees of urbanization with varied landscape, climate, and populations: (a) highly urbanized Kisumu region in western Kenya and (b) the semi-urban Ukanda-Msambweni region of the south-coast region of Kenya.
